Life in Sydney: a starter guide for international students
Sydney has a lot to offer students – the harbour, beaches such as Bondi and Manly, and a busy arts and culture scene with many free events. Here is a short checklist for your first weeks.
Your first week
- Phone: if your phone is unlocked, you can choose a pre-paid service or a SIM-only plan. Pre-paid SIM cards are sold in many shops and supermarkets.
- Bank account: see our guide Bank account and TFN.
- Unique Student Identifier (USI): if you study at a university, TAFE or do other nationally recognised training, you need a USI to receive your qualification. Create it online at usi.gov.au as soon as possible after you arrive, and give it to your college.
- Getting around: see Transport and Opal.
Plan your budget
Study Australia’s Cost of Living Calculator lets you compare accommodation, transport and lifestyle choices and gives a broad estimate of costs. Its figures are an approximate guide only.
Sun and beach safety
The sun in Australia can be strong. At the beach, swim at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags – if there are no flags, there are no lifeguards on duty and you should avoid swimming there.
