Getting around Sydney: transport and Opal

Sydney Harbour Bridge with the Opera House behind it

Metro, trains, buses, ferries and light rail in Sydney all use the Opal network. Fares depend on where, when and how far you travel.

Two ways to pay

  • Opal card – the card itself is free; you add value before you travel. Adult Opal cards are sold over the counter at Opal retailers such as convenience stores and newsagents.
  • Contactless – tap on and off with a contactless credit or debit card, or a phone or watch wallet. You pay the same Opal fares and get the same benefits. Always use the same card or device to tap on and off, and keep your cards apart to avoid “card clash”.

Ways to save (fares as listed in October 2026)

  • Daily caps (adult): no more than $19.30 a day Monday to Thursday, and $9.65 a day on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.
  • Off-peak: 30% off metro/train, bus and light rail fares outside peak times.
  • Transfers: $2 off for every change between modes as part of one journey.

Fares change – check transportnsw.info for current fares and caps.

Student concession fares

Tertiary and TAFE concession fares in NSW are for eligible students – generally Australian citizens and permanent residents, plus holders of a few specific scholarships. Most international students pay adult fares. Check the eligibility rules on transportnsw.info.
