Opening a bank account and getting a TFN
Opening a bank account
Visit a bank branch and tell them you are an international student who wants to open an account. You will need:
- your passport, and
- proof of your address in Australia, such as a phone bill or lease agreement.
Your Tax File Number (TFN)
- You don’t need a TFN to open a bank account, but without one you will be taxed at a higher rate – so give your TFN to your bank once you have it.
- If you work while you study, you will pay income tax and need a TFN. Your employer should also pay superannuation (“super”), a form of retirement savings.
- Applying for a TFN is free. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) explains how to apply depending on your situation – follow the steps on the ATO’s “Apply for a TFN” page.
Apply through the official ATO website – applying for a TFN is free.
