Your next course after you finish

Graduates throwing their caps in the air at sunset

Australia’s qualifications follow the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), which allows flexible pathways – you can move up from one level to the next as you progress.

How the levels connect

  • Certificate IV – builds skills and knowledge for a specific field.
  • Diploma – more advanced than a Certificate IV; prepares you for paraprofessional roles or further study.
  • Advanced Diploma – the next VET level. Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses may also provide study credit towards a university degree.
  • Graduate Diploma – builds on earlier qualifications or professional experience by specialising in one area.
