Things to check before changing course

It happens all the time: the course isn't what you expected, the timetable doesn't work with your job, or you've discovered a field you like more. Changing course can be the right decision – but it's worth pausing to check a few things first.

1. Why do you want to change?

Write down what isn't working. Sometimes a different class, a talk with your teacher or extra support solves the problem. If the course really isn't right, knowing why helps you choose a better one.

2. Is the new course a logical next step?

Think about how the new course connects with what you studied before and with the work you want to do. A clear story makes sense for your future – and for any visa application you make later.

3. What does your current provider need from you?

Providers have their own rules about leaving a course, refunds and timing. Read your written agreement and ask your provider before you sign anything new.

4. Does the change affect your visa?

A change of course or provider can affect your student visa – for example whether your new course is at the right level or whether you need a new visa. The rules depend on your situation and change over time, so check before you act. We check the current requirements for you.

Before you decide

Once you know why you want to change and what your current provider needs from you, compare a few options side by side – level, duration, intakes and campus – before you sign anything new. Our guide Changing course or college walks you through it.
