Your student visa is ending – what now?

Seeing your visa end date getting closer can be stressful. The good news: with a bit of planning, you will usually have a clearer picture of your options – and more time to act on them.

Know your dates

Check the exact end date of your visa and of your course. Put both in your calendar, with a reminder a few months before. Many problems happen simply because people start too late.

Think about what you want next

Do you want to keep studying or go home for a while? Your goals shape which options make sense. If you want to keep studying, you will usually need a new course and a new Student visa (subclass 500).

Check where you can apply

From 2 October 2026, most Student visa applications must be lodged outside Australia. You can apply in Australia only if you meet one of the exemptions set by Home Affairs – for example if you need up to 12 more months to finish your main course with the same provider, or if you have completed your main course and are moving to a course at a higher AQF level. Check the current list on the Home Affairs website before you make plans.

Don't rely on what worked for a friend

Visa rules depend on your personal situation and they change regularly. What worked for someone last year may not work for you today. Information on social media is often out of date.

Get advice early

Read the official information on the Home Affairs website and get advice well before your visa ends. We look at your situation, check the current requirements for you and explain your options honestly – including timing.

Your first consultation is free. Get in touch and we'll help you plan your next step.
