Your first month in Sydney: practical tips
Your first weeks in a new city are exciting – and a little overwhelming. These simple tips will help you settle into life in Sydney.
Get around like a local
Sydney's trains, buses, ferries and light rail all use the same Opal system. You can tap on and off with a card or a contactless bank card or phone. Taking a ferry across the harbour is also one of the nicest ways to see the city.
Keep your documents organised
Keep copies of your passport, visa details, enrolment confirmation and health cover in one safe place, both on paper and digitally. You will need them more often than you think.
Find your people
Join a club at your college, go to student events or try a sport. Friends make everything easier – from finding a room to practising your English.
Look after yourself
The Australian sun is strong, even on cloudy days, so wear sunscreen and a hat. Swim only at patrolled beaches, between the red and yellow flags. And if you're feeling homesick, talk to someone – your provider has support services for students.
Know who to ask
Questions about your course, your visa or what comes next? You don't have to work it out alone. Come and say hello – the first consultation is free.
